It may seem perfectly reasonable to throw all your towels into the same laundry load, but that simple habit isn’t always the best choice. While kitchen and bath towels may look similar and often use the same types of fabric, the way they are used can make a big difference in how they should be washed.

In many cases, kitchen towels and bath towels can safely be washed together. If a kitchen towel has only been used to dry clean hands, dishes, or freshly cleaned surfaces, there is usually no need to separate it from your regular bath towels.

Use a good-quality detergent, follow the care instructions on each towel, and avoid stuffing too many items into the washing machine. Giving the towels enough room to move around helps the detergent and water reach the fabric properly.

Drying is just as important as washing. Towels that remain damp for too long can develop an unpleasant, musty smell and may lose that fresh feeling. Make sure they are completely dry before folding and putting them away. This small step can help keep towels fresher, softer, and more pleasant to use.

There are situations, however, when separating your towels is the smarter option.

Kitchen towels used to wipe up grease, food spills, or juices from raw meat should ideally be washed separately from bath towels. These towels can be considerably more soiled and may require a more thorough wash or a warmer cycle, provided the care label allows it.

Bathroom hand towels, meanwhile, can generally be washed with bath towels because they are used for similar purposes.

The key isn’t to separate every towel automatically. Instead, think about how each towel was used.

A lightly used kitchen towel that only dried clean hands or dishes can usually go into a regular towel load. A towel that has absorbed grease, food residue, or other messes is better kept separate.

By paying attention to how your towels are used, following their care labels, and making sure they dry completely, you can keep your laundry routine simple while helping your towels stay clean, fresh, soft, and in good condition for longer.
